How Ukrainian Zakazniks Have Become Reserves

Summary:
The “zakaznik” category of protected areas have been used since 1921 with the aim to improve the “stocks” of wildfowl, fish and medicinal plants in natural lands. Only in 1978 zakazniks were intermingled into the categories of natural reserve fund. However, since 1921 certain nature conservationists, including N. Sharleman, predicted that zakazniks would become the first step in developing the network of protected areas. The article presents the results of an analytical study of the origin of modern category of the natural reserve fund “zakaznik”. There were analysed the consequences of changing the zakazniks’ function from economic to environmental. There is shown the role of zakazniks in forming of environmental worldview of Ukrainians in the 20th century. Modern problems of zakazniks as a category of natural reserve fund are also disclosed.
