The Fund Collection of the Museum of Forest Mammals and Birds Named After Professor O. O. Salhansky (Kyiv)

Summary:
The fund collection of the Museum of forest mammals and birds named after Professor O. O. Salhansky, NULES of Ukraine is described. The museum was founded in 1898 on the basis of the КPI. In 1930, the museum was handed to the Kyiv Institute of Forestry. From 1952 to 2003, the Museum was leaded by Prof. О. О. Salhansky. The museum exists as part of the Department of Forest Biology and Wildlife Management (Education and Research Institute of Forestry and Park Gardening, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine). The total amount of the collection is 530 specimens. Among carcasses of birds (154 species, 98 genera, 38 families and 14 orders) and mammals (19 species, 17 genera, 5 families and 2 orders) there are 14 species presented in the Red Data Book of Ukraine. In addition, there are carcasses of 3 species included to the IUCN Red List under category “threatened” and 5 species from the European Red List as well. The area of collecting activities includes the territory of Ukraine, Russia, Republic of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The present collection can be used in faunal, systematical, phenological and morphological studies, as well as to supplement and specify data concerning the distribution of species included in various “red” lists.
