Presentation of information in the reference cadastre

The book contains data about the range of amphibians listed in the last edition of the Red Book of Ukraine (The Red Book of Ukraine/Edited by М. М. Scherbak. — К.: Ukrainian Encyclopedia, 1994. — Page 464) and those taxons of amphibians which were proposed to be entered in the new edition of the Red Book of Ukraine at the conference of curators of the National Commission of the Red Book of Ukraine on June 15, 2004. Data about natural habitats of amphibians listed in the Red Book of Ukraine is based on three sources.

      1. Materials of stock collections of the largest museums of Ukraine and Russia:
The Zoological Museum of the National Museum of Natural History of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine (ZM NMNH), the Zoological Museum of the Uzhgorod University (ZMUU), Herpetology and Ornithology Department of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Science (ZISP), the Zoological Museum of the Moscow University named after Lomonosov (ZMM), the Zoological Museum of the Kyiv National University named after Taras Shevchenko (ZMKU), the Nature Museum of the Kharkiv University (NMCU), the Zoological Museum of the Lviv State University named after Franko (ZMLSU), the State Natural History Museum of the Ukrainian National Academy of Science, Lviv (NSMUNAS), the United Stated Nature Museum, Washington, USA USNM).
2. Published in scientific editions evidence of Ukrainian Red Book amphibians found in any regions.
3. Verbal reports of specialists.

Materials about the range of each species begin with a brief review of the species. Further on we offer a list of locations where these animals were found according to materials from the largest museums and they are normally listed in the inventory number augmentation sequence. Each such a location is marked by the # sign and a corresponding figure which indicate its place on the map. When mapping these collection points we used as a rule the geographical map scale of 1 : 200 000 and the corresponding Reference of Administrative Names of Ukraine (Gorpinich, 2001). Inventory numbers of each museum are marked as N, then after the oblique stroke the number of animals (if any) from this selection is written and the number of adult species (the number of larvae or subadult species is shown separately in this selection). It should be also noted that author or original labels may use various formats of collection dates: "May.21.1957", "25,04,1966", "12.VI.1960", "28,4,75", etc. Therefore, for convenient perception the date of material collection is put at the bottom of the label and is written in Arabic numerals in the single "year.month.day" format (e.g.: "1949.08.22"). In this edition we have preserved the original style of the date of collection. In many cases the name of the country, administrative oblasts or rayons of collection points were absent in the author's or original version. Later on they were usually determined during office studies of the material and indicated either in the beginning or additionally in parenthesis. For convenient perception the abridged written versions of administrative and geographical names in authors' or original labels (e.g. "Львовск.", "Ив-Фр.", etc.) were transformed to full versions of the names ("Львовская/Lviv", "Ивано-Франковская/Ivano-Frankivsk", etc.). We also changed such abbreviations as "бук." в "буковый/beech wood", "гр." или "граб." в "грабовый/hornbeam", etc. when indicating a collection point, we made the most use of author's (or original) information about the collection point and this data is given in square brackets (as a rule, this is information on labels either secured to animals or placed inside containers). Notes in parenthesis given inside square brackets are specified information or missing on the original label or added by the authors of the edition.

At the end of the notes we indicate the nature of information provided for each concrete selection in square brackets (the author's or original type of the label). If the author's or original label is missing we give a collection label for this collection point, i.e. the one which is usually put on the container with the selection and equipped with an inventory number. It should be noted that in individual selections there is also previous data on labels of other museums (e.g., if the materials came to the stock collections on exchange from other depositories), labels of earlier (=other) inventory systems, field comments of the authors of material collected, etc. It is possible that such information will be useful in subsequent works and therefore it is also offered in this edition.

Information about the range based on literary sources is offered as a reference to the respective author and year of publication, then after two oblique strokes (\\) - information in square brackets about the location where any species from this work is found. Additional information form a literary source is usually offered beyond the squire brackets and/or in parenthesis. Materials about encountering any species based on verbal reports of experts are given with the indication of their position and place of work, then after the oblique stroke (\) - the place and time of the observation.
