Summary:
The paper is dedicated to the memory of Vladyslav Ivanovych Monchenko, a famous zoologist who died at age 84. A brief outline of the main events of complicated scientific and human destiny of this outstanding zoologist is given. Monchenko’s scientific legacy includes 191 contributions published during his lifetime (among them 8 monographs and textbooks), as well as almost fifty new taxa of copepods and their parasites, and a unique collection of Copepoda. Scientists far beyond Ukraine admit fundamental generalizations of V. I. Monchenko, such as the discovery of switch factors of seasonal induction stimulating copepod’s diapause entry and exit, the conception of regressive oligomerization of copepods’ limbs as the main morphological direction of the group’s evolution, and the experimentally proved the existence of cryptic species in Cyclopoida. Organizational work in the sphere of science and pedagogical activities of Vladyslav Ivanovych also received the desired recognition.
