summary:

The essay is dedicated to memory of Yaroslav Movchan, an ecologist, co-founder of modern environmental movement in Ukraine, developer of the national strategy for nature protection and biodiversity conservation. The essay outlines basic principles of Yaroslav Movchan’s vision on environmental problems, ecologically sustainable nature use and instruments of biodiversity conservation. Special attention is paid to his contribution into the creation of the National Ecological Centre of Ukraine (1991), foundation of the ecological journal ‘Oikumena: Ukrainian Ecological Bulletin’, and to the development of the concept of formation and realization of the National Ecological Network of Ukraine as an instrument for biodiversity conservation and an integral part of the European Ecological Network (EECONET) and the prerequisites for the transition to ecologically sustainable nature use. The essay also points out Yaroslav Movchan’s contribution into the development of environmental legislation and creation of objects of the nature reserve fund of Ukraine. Yaroslav Movchan defined ecology as a theory and methodology of nature use, and the latter can be interpreted as an applied ecology. His vision of the prospects for Ukraine's environmental policy was based on the principle ‘economically, that is environmentally friendly’. Yaroslav Movchan considered the idea of econet as one of the most fundamental ideas of the last decades of the 20th century that was proposed for the European agenda in 1993 by a group of Dutch researchers. EECONET is an instrument to overcome the negative environmental consequences of the economic growth and as an attempt at least partially offset losses in the natural environment. In his scientific works, Yaroslav Movchan argued that development of the National econet should be based on understanding biodiversity as a holistic system-organized complex. Yaroslav Movchan’s titanic effort in the field of biodiversity conservation together with other scholars were rewarded by the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology (2005).
