Ivan Sakhno and development of zoology and museology in Luhansk region: historical investigations

Summary:
Brief biographical outline about Dr. Ivan Sakhno (1904–1984), famous Ukrainian ecologist and
mammalogist, student of V. Stanchinsky and I. Volchanetsky, who had a difficult way from educator of
orphanage in his native city Lebedyn (Sumy region) to the head of the Department of Zoology in the
Luhansk Pedagogical Institute (now Luhansk National University, LNU). In October 1934 Ivan Sakhno
founded the first and for many years of Eastern Ukraine the only Zoological Museum and Department of
Zoology, originally started as Cabinet of Zoology (1934) and finally formed as Zoological Museum and
Department in March of 1938. He was the author of 34 articles and the first scientific mentor for more
than 10 candidates and doctors of sciences, a famous scholar in the field of study of several important
topics: 1) forming of steppe windbreaks fauna and its impact on the adjacent agroecosystem, 2) study of
population dynamics and protection needs of high-ranked rare mammals of Eastern Ukraine, 3) analysis
of the existence success of newly introduced species of game animals populations, 4) general analysis of
long-term changes of Eastern Ukrainian mammal fauna, 5) analysis of composition and dynamics of the
hunting fauna in the Luhansk region. Details on major milestones of the researcher’s life in relation to
the development of ecozoological research, zoological collections and zoological education during his
employment in LNU (1934 to 1969) and subsequently, after the Ivan Sakhno continued his research after
retirement (1969 to 1984).
