Eurasian Beaver (Castor fiber; Mammalia) in the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve

Selyunina Z., Plyusch S.

Summary:
The latest evidence of beavers habitation in the mouth of the Dnipro area refers to 1836. Spread of the Beaver in Ukraine in the middle of the twentieth century was limited to a few small colonies. In 1980, a pair of beavers was brought to Kutsurub hunting on the Kinburn peninsula. However, beavers almost immediately moved into the territory of the Volyzhyn Forest (the part of the Black Sea Reserve), where they found more favorable conditions for life. In 1996, a family of beavers left dried up Volyzhyn forest because of prolonged drought and moved deeper into the peninsula. Since the beginning of the 2000s, throughout the region the increase in the number of the Beaver has occurred. As a result of the resettlement of the Castor fiber in the Lower of the Dnipro and increase in its number, in recent years beavers have been observed in atypical for them habitats: drainage channels (2014–2015), on the sea islands (2014 — on Kruhly Island, Yagorlytsky bay).
