European wild cat, Felis silvestris Schreber, 1777 (Felidae, Carnivora, Mammalia), in Ukraine (distribution, population structure and new findings)

Schevchenko L. S., Peskov V. N.

Summary:
Summarized literature data and original data for the wild cats distribution in Ukraine. New findings of the specie in Vinnitsa and Kirovograd oblast are the evidence of the specie natural habitat extension for about 300 km in East direction over the borders of historically known regions i.e. Carpathians, Dnestr river adjacent areas and Danube river delta. Results of the comparatory-morphological studies of the wild cats skulls collection has shown that the majority of the samples from Ukrainian territory (up to 70 %) is presented by hybrid specimens and only 30 % of them are “pure” F. s. silvestris. The final decision on Ukrainian population structure requires encouragement of more broad materials and modern study methods including genetic ones.
